Session description

Running a university website is a team sport. No one person can do it all, but also you can't have everybody doing everything.

It's tempting to try to solve this issue with technology. After all, WordPress provides a set of standard roles, from Subscriber to Super Admin. If we could get those permissions set just right, maybe all our troubles would be over...

Stop right there. You'll never permission your way to solid web governance. This presentation will look at the basic roles needed to manage a higher ed website, both inside and outside the central web team—including some important roles that have no CMS access at all. We'll look at:

  • Typical responsibilities for each role
  • How to adapt those roles to your campus's specific needs
  • Documenting roles using a RACI chart
  • Mapping roles onto WordPress's permission structure
  • Managing content workflow when WordPress doesn't do workflow

At heart, web governance is a people problem, not a technology problem. This session will go beyond technology to set you up for governance success.
